Dark fantasy fans, this is the announcement you did not see coming. On July 2, 2026, the official website and social media channels for Witch and Hound went live with a single mission: to confirm that Rainy Kamitsuki’s brutal and beautiful light novel series is getting a full TV anime adaptation. And if the first teaser trailer is anything to go by, this is going to be one of the most talked-about dark fantasy anime of the next few years.
What makes this reveal so exciting? It is not just another fantasy anime with a moody protagonist. Witch and Hound blends political warfare, assassins, terrifying witches, and a world where magic is controlled by a single ruthless kingdom. With TriF Studio handling the animation and an experienced staff attached, the project already feels far bigger than your average seasonal announcement.
What Is Witch and Hound?
The story is set in a world where the Kingdom of Amelia dominates its neighbors through a monopoly on powerful mages. Smaller nations have little choice but to bow or be crushed. One of those smaller nations, Campus Fellow, decides it has had enough. Faced with destruction, its leaders come up with a desperate plan: find and recruit seven feared witches who are rumored across the land.
Enter Rollo, an elite assassin better known as the “Black Hound.” Ordered by his lord, Rollo is sent on a dangerous mission to locate these witches and bring them into an alliance. His first target is the mysterious witch known as the Mirror Witch, and from there the story spirals into battles, betrayals, and secrets that threaten to reshape the entire continent.
The Anime Announcement and Staff
The TV anime adaptation of Witch and Hound was announced on July 2, 2026, complete with a teaser trailer, a teaser visual, and the reveal of the main production staff. Takanori Tsujimoto is directing the series, with Kengo Saito in charge of character designs. Series composition is being handled by Jun Tsugita, and perhaps most notably, original author Rainy Kamitsuki is also joining the scriptwriting team to make sure the adaptation stays faithful to the source material.
Animation production is being handled by TriF Studio, the same studio behind Mecha-Ude. While the studio is still building its name, the teaser visuals show a strong sense of atmosphere and color that could help the series stand out in an increasingly crowded dark fantasy market. Original illustrator LAM also shared a congratulatory message alongside the announcement, adding even more credibility to the project.
Why This Could Be the Next Big Dark Fantasy Hit
There is no shortage of dark fantasy anime out there, but Witch and Hound has a few things working in its favor. First, the premise feels fresh. Instead of a chosen hero, we follow an assassin working for a desperate nation. The witches are not friendly mentors or love interests; they are weapons of mass destruction treated with genuine fear. The power dynamic between Amelia, Campus Fellow, and the witches creates instant tension.
Second, the timing is perfect. The light novel series has six volumes published under Shogakukan’s Gagagaga Bunko label as of December 2024, and a manga adaptation illustrated by Minori Tsukahara ran for four volumes at Square Enix. Yen Press is already publishing the manga in English, which means international readers have a way to catch up before the anime airs. That built-in fanbase can make or break a new adaptation.
What Do We Still Need to Know?
The big question now is the release window. The teaser did not confirm a premiere date, which means the project is likely still in early production. Voice cast details are also being kept under wraps for now. Fans are already guessing who could voice Rollo and the Mirror Witch, and the studio will probably drop that information in a follow-up update later this year.
Until then, the safest move is to read the light novel or manga if you can. With Rainy Kamitsuki directly involved in the scripts and a studio clearly trying to make a statement, Witch and Hound is shaping up to be far more than a casual addition to the 2026 anime slate.
