After ten years, three TV seasons, and multiple films, the last note has finally been played. Sound Euphonium The Final Movie Part 2 opened in Japanese theaters on September 11, 2026, closing the book on one of Kyoto Animation most beloved franchises – and early reactions say the finale hits harder than anything the studio has ever made.
The staff marked the premiere by streaming a special video featuring brand-new footage, while director Taichi Ogawa shared a commemorative illustration to celebrate opening day. For fans who have followed Kumiko Oumae since 2015, this is the goodbye nobody is ready for.
A Decade of Kitauji, Coming to an End
Kyoto Animation describes the film with a line that already has fans emotional: “This journey will become our next song. For the past ten years, Sound Euphonium has portrayed the youth of high school students devoted to concert band.”
Following the emotional conclusion of Sound Euphonium 3 in 2024, the story returned to theaters in 2026 as The Final Movie – a two-part theatrical project. Part 1 opened on April 24, 2026, and now Part 2 delivers the definitive conclusion, featuring numerous newly created scenes plus performance sequences that were never depicted in the television series.
The message from the studio says it all: “What remains here is the promise made that day. The curtain falls on the beloved anime series. Its final movement begins.”
The Dream Team Behind the Finale
For the Final Movie, Kyoto Animation assembled its heaviest hitters. Tatsuya Ishihara serves as chief director, while Taichi Ogawa directs – both have shaped the franchise for years. Screenwriter Jukki Hanada penned a brand-new screenplay, and character designers Shoko Ikeda and Kazumi Ikeda return, with Kazumi Ikeda also serving as chief animation director.
Music comes from composer Akito Matsuda at Lantis and Heart Company, with cooperation from Senzoku Gakuen College of Music – fitting for a series where the concert band performances are the soul of the story. The entire staff came together to create what the studio calls the definitive conclusion.
Kumiko, Reina, and the Voices We Love
The film reunites the iconic cast led by Tomoyo Kurosawa as Kumiko Oumae and Chika Anzai as Reina Kousaka – a duo whose friendship and rivalry defined the series. They are joined by Ayaka Asai as Hazuki Kato, Moe Toyota as Sapphire Kawashima, and Haruka Tomatsu as Mayu Kuroe.
The ensemble also includes Haruki Ishiya as Shuuichi Tsukamoto, Sora Amamiya as Kanade Hisaishi, Misaki Kuno as Satsuki Suzuki, Takahiro Sakurai as Noboru Taki, plus Ayaka Ohashi, Ayaka Nanase, Shimba Tsuchiya, Shiina Natsukawa and more. It is a full homecoming for the Kitauji Concert Band.
The franchise began with the 13-episode TV series in April 2015, continued with Sound Euphonium 2 in 2016, the Liz and the Blue Bird film in 2018, Our Promise: A Brand New Day in 2019, and the Ensemble Contest OVA in 2023 – all adapted from Ayano Takeda original novels. Few anime franchises have sustained this level of quality for this long.
Why This Finale Matters So Much
Sound Euphonium is not just another school anime. It is Kyoto Animation most grounded, human drama – a story about practice rooms, failed auditions, jealousy, ambition, and the quiet promise between friends. The Final Movie reportedly includes never-before-animated performance sequences, giving theater audiences an experience the TV series never could.
With the first film having opened in April and Part 2 now playing, the two-part finale mirrors how the franchise always worked: slow build, honest emotion, then a performance that makes the whole journey worth it. Early Japanese fan reactions describe packed screenings and tears during the final concert scene.
