The Land of War, Elbaf, has completely dismantled everything fans believed about the final power balance of the Grand Line. With the release of One Piece Chapter 1196, Eiichiro Oda has accelerated the narrative pace toward an unimaginable collision point. While Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates navigate the towering heights of the legendary Warland alongside giants Dorry and Brogy, the true horror buried under Yggdrasil has finally surfaced. Prince Loki, the disgraced royal heir bound in Seastone chains at the underworld roots of Elbaf, is no ordinary renegade prince. A shocking new theory suggests that Loki’s mythical cursed Devil Fruit is not merely a regional calamity, but the direct metaphysical antithesis to Luffy’s Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika—an ancient weapon originally engineered during the Void Century to execute Joy Boy.
The Mystery of Elbaf: What Chapter 1196 Has Revealed
Ever since the Straw Hats escaped the apocalyptic Buster Call on Egghead Island and Vegapunk broadcasted the truth of the world sinking beneath the sea, Elbaf stood as the final sanctuary of ancient history. However, Chapter 1196 delivers shocking context regarding why Emperor Shanks and the Red Hair Pirates guarded Elbaf so vigilantly. When Luffy broke away from Roronoa Zoro, Sanji, and Nami to explore the frozen subterranean domain below the Adam Tree, he came face to face with Prince Loki. The sheer density of Advanced Conqueror’s Haki radiating from the chained giant was palpable enough to make Luffy’s Gear 5 heartbeat resonate uncontrollably.
According to ancient giant lore unveiled across recent chapters, Prince Loki assassinated his father, King Harald, to consume Elbaf’s sacred treasure—a legendary Devil Fruit whispered to bring catastrophic winter upon the entire world. But why would the World Government, overseen by the enigmatic Sovereign Imu and the Five Elders (Gorosei), designate this specific power as an extinction-level threat? If we examine the deep mythological symbolism Oda constantly weaves into the tapestry of the series, Loki does not represent random chaos. In Norse mythology, Loki brings about Ragnarok—the doom of the gods and the consumption of the sun. In the world of One Piece, where Luffy is the reincarnated Sun God Nika bringing dawn and laughter to the oppressed, Loki holds the power that extinguishes the dawn itself.
Manga Evidence: The Sun God vs. The Eclipse Sovereign
To understand why this theory holds tremendous weight, readers must re-examine the intricate breadcrumbs Oda planted throughout the manga:
- The Resonance of the Drums of Liberation: As soon as Luffy approached Loki’s prison beneath the Great Tree, his pulse involuntarily synchronized with the Drums of Liberation. In Wano against Kaido, and in Egghead against Saint Jaygarcia Saturn and Saint Ethanbaron V. Nusjuro, Gear 5 activated purely in response to joy, danger, or righteous battle. Yet in Chapter 1196, Luffy visibly clutches his chest in agony as a chilling mist counteracts the burning heat of Nika’s flame clouds. This mirrors the elemental duality Oda established between opposing Devil Fruits like Blackbeard’s Yami Yami no Mi and Whitebeard’s Gura Gura no Mi.
- Loki’s Bizarre Blindfold and Seastone Shackles: Loki remains restrained with colossal Seastone chains forged from the deepest volcanic veins of Wano, secured directly into the roots of Elbaf. His eyes are perpetually bound, hiding an ocular ability or ocular corruption. Much like Imu’s piercing red spiral eyes that command shadow demons, Loki’s lineage may be intertwined with the First Twenty kingdoms that fought against the Ancient Kingdom 800 years ago.
- Shanks’ Reluctance to Slay Loki: Why did the Yonko “Red-Haired” Shanks merely defeat and imprison Loki instead of executing him? Shanks understands the delicate balance of the Void Century prophecy. Destroying Loki’s physical vessel would cause his primordial Devil Fruit to reincarnate randomly somewhere across the four blues, making it impossible to monitor or contain before the final war arrives.

The Void Century Connection: Was Loki’s Fruit Created to Kill Joy Boy?
Vegapunk revealed during his worldwide broadcast that Devil Fruits are born from human desire and wishes—a manifestation of potential evolutions. If the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika was born from humanity’s collective longing for freedom, laughter, and liberation from tyrannical chains, what generated Loki’s cursed fruit? The answer lies in the tyrannical despair of the Void Century ruling class.
When the original Joy Boy led the Ancient Kingdom alongside ancient allies like the Kozuki clan, the Lunarians, and the ancient giant robot Emeth, their supreme mobility and reality-bending imagination seemed completely uncontainable. The theory posits that the ancient alliance forged Loki’s cursed fruit out of pure dread and malice—an unnatural anti-concept meant to drain temperature, silence sound, and immobilize rubber elasticity. When extreme absolute zero temperature hits rubber, elasticity shatters instantly like brittle glass. By introducing Loki as a wild card who despises both the World Government and the naive idealism of giant elders, Oda has created an unpredictable foil who could either extinguish Luffy’s sun or force Luffy to awaken an entirely unprecedented form of Gear 5.

Future Predictions: The Ragnarok War of Elbaf
Where does the story progress following the intense revelations of Chapter 1196? Here are the most compelling predictions for the upcoming chapters:
- The Unholy Alliance: Luffy never refuses an adventure or a fascinating challenger. Despite Prince Loki’s treacherous reputation, Luffy will strike a conditional pact to release him, wanting to judge Loki’s true heart rather than accepting the propaganda of Elbaf’s royal court.
- Cross Guild and Blackbeard Infiltration: Marshall D. Teach (Blackbeard) specializes in tracking supreme Devil Fruits. With Catarina Devon and Van Augur securing Caribou’s secrets regarding ancient weapons Poseidon and Pluton, Blackbeard will inevitably target Loki’s prison to seize the ultimate counter-weapon against Nika.
- The Awakening of the Warland Giants: Warrior chieftains Dorry, Brogy, and ancient warriors like Oimo and Kashi will be forced to choose between conservative tradition and siding with the pirate crew that carries Joy Boy’s ancient mantle.
- Imu’s Direct Intervention: The Holy Land of Mary Geoise cannot permit Elbaf to align with Nika. The God’s Knights (Holy Knights), led by Saint Figarland Garling, will launch an aerial vanguard to cleanse the island before the secrets of the Adam Tree become public knowledge.
As the visual spectacle of the medium continues to evolve in modern times—similar to how Science SARU reimagined kinetic art in Dandadan’s Insane Visual Style—Eiichiro Oda’s masterwork proves that after more than a quarter-century of serialization, One Piece still delivers jaw-dropping mystery and unmatched world-building.
