Ghost of Tsushima Legends Anime Just Revealed Its First Character Designs — And the Creative Team Is Insane

When Sony announced that Ghost of Tsushima was getting an anime adaptation, fans of the PlayStation blockbuster were skeptical. After all, video game adaptations have a mixed track record. But now, with the first character visuals finally revealed at Anime Expo 2026, every doubt has been shattered — because the team behind this project is absolutely stacked.

Crunchyroll took the stage in Los Angeles to unveil the first official look at Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, the anime adaptation of the supernatural multiplayer mode from Sucker Punch Productions’ hit samurai game. And no, this is not a retelling of Jin Sakai’s story. Instead, the anime dives into the mythology-driven world of Legends, following three new characters: the Assassin, the Hunter, and the Ronin.

The Creative Team Is a Dream Collaboration

Here is where things get genuinely exciting. The staff list reads like an all-star roster of anime talent:

  • Director: Takanobu Mizuno — best known for directing “The Duel” in Star Wars: Visions, widely considered the standout episode of the entire anthology series
  • Series Composition & Script: Gen Urobuchi (Nitro Plus) — the legendary writer behind Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Psycho-Pass, and Fate/Zero
  • Script: Satoshi Maejima (Nitro Plus) — co-writer bringing additional narrative depth
  • Character Design: Takashi Okazaki — the creator of Afro Samurai, bringing his signature bold style to feudal Japan
  • Animation Production: KAMIKAZE DOUGA — the studio behind Batman Ninja, Batman Ninja vs. The Yakuza League, and Sand Land: The Series
  • Production: Hayate, in collaboration with Aniplex, Sony Music, and PlayStation Productions

Let that sink in for a moment. The man who wrote Madoka Magica is scripting a samurai supernatural epic. The creator of Afro Samurai is designing the characters. And the director who delivered one of the most visually stunning Star Wars anime shorts is at the helm.

What Is Ghost of Tsushima: Legends?

Unlike the main Ghost of Tsushima game — where players control Jin Sakai fighting against the Mongol invasion of 1274 — the Legends multiplayer mode explored Japanese mythology. Players teamed up as different warrior classes to battle supernatural threats: demons, spirits, and otherworldly creatures rooted in Japanese folklore.

The anime adaptation will focus on three warrior classes from the game: the Assassin, the Hunter, and the Ronin. Each character visual revealed at Anime Expo 2026 showcases a distinct design philosophy — blending historical samurai aesthetics with supernatural elements that Takashi Okazaki is known for.

Given KAMIKAZE DOUGA’s track record with CG animation (Batman Ninja was a visual spectacle, whether you loved or hated its story), fans can expect a similarly stylized approach. This will not look like your typical anime. It will be bold, kinetic, and unlike anything else on Crunchyroll.

Not Just Jin Sakai — A Different Story Entirely

One of the most surprising reveals is that the Ghost of Tsushima anime will not adapt the story of Jin Sakai or Atsu (the protagonist of the upcoming sequel game Ghost of Yotei). Instead, it carves its own path within the Legends universe, exploring tales of supernatural warfare against mythological foes.

This is a smart move. Rather than retelling a story that players already experienced, the anime expands the franchise’s lore. It also avoids the common pitfall of direct video game adaptations, which often feel like watching someone else play through a game. With Gen Urobuchi at the keyboard, expect dark themes, moral complexity, and probably more than a few gut-wrenching plot twists. Urobuchi is infamous for subverting expectations — if you have seen Madoka Magica or Psycho-Pass, you know exactly what kind of emotional damage is possible.

The Bigger Picture: PlayStation Anime Universe?

Ghost of Tsushima: Legends is not arriving in isolation. It is part of a broader strategy by Sony and PlayStation Productions to adapt their gaming IP into anime and live-action projects. With Crunchyroll as the streaming home and Aniplex handling production, this is a Sony ecosystem play from top to bottom.

And it is not the only samurai game adaptation coming. Sekiro: No Defeat, based on FromSoftware’s brutal ninja action game, is also heading to screens later this year. The two series could potentially compete for the title of best video game anime adaptation — a rivalry that benefits anime fans enormously. Release Window and What Comes Next

Ghost of Tsushima: Legends is officially slated for a 2027 release on Crunchyroll. No specific date or trailer has been released yet — the Anime Expo 2026 reveal was limited to character visuals and staff announcements. However, with this level of talent attached, a first trailer could drop at any major anime event in the coming months.

The character visuals themselves reveal a striking art direction. The Assassin, Hunter, and Ronin each sport designs that blend historical accuracy with exaggerated, almost comic-book-like flair — very much in line with Takashi Okazaki’s work on Afro Samurai. The color palette leans dark and moody, fitting for a story about supernatural warfare in feudal Japan.
