Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave Direct Just Hid a Secret Protagonist, a Wild Timeskip — and the $80 Debate Nobody Can Escape

What was supposed to be a routine 20-minute deep dive turned into one of the most talked-about Nintendo Directs of the year. On August 4, Nintendo pulled the curtain back on Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave for Switch 2 — and by the time the stream ended, fans weren’t just fired up about the combat. They were arguing about a secret protagonist, a five-year timeskip, a returning goddess, and an $80 price tag that refuses to leave the conversation.

Four Heroes, One Wish

Fortune’s Weave takes place in the Dagdan Empire, right next door to the Fodlan region players fell in love with in Fire Emblem: Three Houses. This time, the story revolves around the Heroic Games, a deadly tournament where four protagonists compete for a single wish granted by the Divine Sovereign:

  • Cai — enters the Games to save his father, who was wrongfully imprisoned.
  • Dietrich — a warrior who only wants to sate his thirst for battle.
  • Theodora — devoted to the goddess of death and night, fighting for her kingdom’s honor.
  • Leda — seeking revenge after discovering her father’s killer is competing in the Games.

According to the fan chats during the Direct, Leda and Cai are already the early heroes. The big twist? You don’t have to pick just one — more on that in a second.

Battles You Can Rewind — and a New Combat Mode

Classic Fire Emblem tactics are back: axes are high-risk, high-reward, swords are the all-rounders, and the weapon triangle does its thing. But there are two huge changes. First, the Direct showed a character outright pulling out a gun mid-battle — something that had longtime fans doing a double take. Second, and bigger: rewind is now a core mechanic. One scene showed a unit dying in battle, only for the player to rewind to any previous point in the fight and rethink the strategy, saving the unit entirely.

And for players who want a different rhythm, Clashes are a brand-new mode that turns Fire Emblem into a traditional turn-based RPG — think older Final Fantasy battles happening right in the middle of your tactical campaign.

The City of Dagsion Is Your Hub

Between matches, the arena city of Dagsion is yours to explore. You can watch opponents’ matches to research them, buy and upgrade gear, volunteer at temples for divine blessings, and take certification exams to unlock new classes. Side quests, NPCs you can recruit by giving gifts or inviting them to dinner, and inns where your units bond and train — it’s the social hub fans have been asking for.

You can also leave the city on expeditions: visit other towns, fight skirmishes for experience, and raid dungeons. Everything costs time, so planning matters. And here’s the killer feature: you can play as all four protagonists at once, switching between their stories in parallel — no need for four separate playthroughs to see the whole picture.

The Twist: A Five-Year Timeskip and a Hidden Hero

Then came the ending of the Direct, and honestly, it broke the fanbase. A five-year timeskip reveals a dark future — the protagonists’ statues lie shattered, the heroes have vanished, and demons are invading. That’s when Sothis, the goddess from Three Houses, answers the call and summons a new champion: Eshmel, the figure hidden in the artwork since reveal, now confirmed as the game’s true protagonist, complete with male and female variants. With Fortuna’s time-traveling powers, you can rewind the story itself to save the other four heroes — or face the invasion alone. Your choice.

The $80 Elephant in the Room

Not even the twist could completely drown out conversation about the price tag. At $80 — the same premium tier as Mario Kart World — Fortune’s Weave is one of the most expensive Switch 2 games announced so far. The Direct was arguably the game’s last shot to justify that price with content, and the rewind mechanic, the parallel arcs, and the hidden campaign all try hard. Whether they succeeded is now the biggest debate in the community ahead of its September 17 release.

What do you think?

Does the secret-protagonist twist justify Fire Emblem’s first $80 price on Switch 2? Will you grind through all four stories as Cai, Leda, Dietrich, or Theodora — or jump straight to Eshmel’s true campaign the moment the game lets you? And how do you feel about permadeath becoming a thing of the past? The comments are the battlefield now — have at it.
