Four years after David Martinez flatlined in one of anime’s most gut-wrenching finales, Cyberpunk: Edgeruers 2 just dropped a bombshell at Anime Expo 2026 — and Night City is about to get a whole lot louder. Netflix, CD Projekt Red, and Studio Trigger revealed the full new crew, a stuing key visual, and a Fall 2026 release window that has the anime community absolutely losing its mind.
If you thought the first season was a emotional rollercoaster, buckle up. This isn’t a sequel that’s playing it safe.
A Brand New Crew With Zero Chill
The most striking thing about Edgeruers 2? Completely new cast. No David, no Lucy, no Rebecca (RIP). Instead, we’re getting four fresh faces who look like they’re about to tear Night City apart in their own spectacular ways.
Weak Kingsley is described as a veteran Edgeruer who now lives in the shadow of his former glory. Think of him as the burnt-out legend who can’t quite let go of the streets — a character archetype that hits different in the Cyberpunk universe. Then there’s D, a Snake Natioetruer on a revenge mission, hunting the killer who wiped out his clan. If that doesn’t scream “tragic backstory incoming,” nothing does.
Roman Carax is probably the most intriguing of the bunch — a cinephile searching for real stories in a city that abandoned cinema for braindances. That’s some peak Cyberpunk worldbuilding right there. And rounding out the crew is Talia Yang, a woman with ties to both Arasaka corpo politics and the Maelstrom gang, whose heart “belongs to chrome and violence.” Absolute menace energy.
Studio Trigger Is Back — And They’re Not Holding Back
The fact that Studio Trigger is returning to animate Edgeruers 2 is arguably the biggest reassurance fans could ask for. The first season was a visual masterpiece — a neon-soaked, frenetically animated fever dream that made every frame feel like a piece of art. Trigger’s signature style meshed perfectly with Night City’s aesthetic, and getting them back for Season 2 means we’re in for another visual spectacle.
Kai Ikarashi is taking over directing duties, with Kao Ichigo handling character designs. The writing team features the return of Bartosz Sztybor and Masahiko Otsuka — both of whom worked on the original series. That continuity behind the scenes is crucial, especially when you’re telling a completely new story in the same universe.
The Big Question: Can It Match Season 1’s Emotional Devastation?
Let’s be real — Cyberpunk: Edgeruers didn’t become a cultural phenomenon because of its action scenes alone. It was the emotional gut punch of watching David Martinez spiral from hopeful teenager to chromed-out mercenary who pushed his body past every limit. The ending left fans devastated for weeks, and the series basically revived interest in Cyberpunk 2077 overnight.
The official description gives us some clues: “In a city that thrives in the spotlight of violence, one question remains: when the world is blinded by spectacle, what extremes do you have to go to make your story matter?”
That sounds like Trigger and CD Projekt Red are doubling down on the themes of ambition, self-destruction, and the cost of living in a world that chews people up. If Weak Kingsley is truly a faded legend, expect some serious parallels to David’s own trajectory — except from the other side of the mirror.
Fall 2026 — The Wait Is Almost Over
With a Fall 2026 release window locked in, we’re looking at just a few months before we’re back iight City. A new teaser trailer is expected to drop at Anime Expo 2026 on July 3rd, which should give us our first real look at the animation and tone of the sequel.
