Tokyo Game Show 2026 opens its doors TOMORROW – September 17 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba – and this year lineup might be the most stacked the show has seen in a decade. Square Enix is bringing playable demos of Kingdom Hearts IV and Final Fantasy VII Revelation. Capcom just wrapped a 40-minute Spotlight showcase. Monster Hunter Wilds Ascendance, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Mega Man: Dual Override, Dragon Quest VII Reimagined – the heavy hitters are ALL here. If you only follow one gaming event this fall, make it this one.
Square Enix Goes All-In: Kingdom Hearts IV Playable at Last
The single biggest story of TGS 2026 is that Square Enix is letting attendees actually PLAY Kingdom Hearts IV on the show floor. After years of trailers and silence from director Tetsuya Nomura, fans will finally get hands-on time with Sora next adventure. Expect the Quadratum footage to dominate social media within hours of the doors opening – and expect Nomura to drop at least one surprise during the show.
But Square Enix did not stop there. Final Fantasy VII Revelation gets a playable demo plus dedicated photo spots for each entry of the remake trilogy – Cloud Strife fans, charge your phones. Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is also playable, continuing series creator Yuji Horii big remake push alongside Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World. Add Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold, Final Fantasy Resonance, Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy, and the Kingdom Hearts Collection, and the Square Enix booth is basically its own convention.
Capcom Spotlight Just Set the Stage
Capcom fired the opening shot early with its Capcom Spotlight broadcast on September 16 – 40 minutes of news that set up its TGS floor presence. The publisher booth lineup includes Dragon Dogma II: Dark Arisen (launching October 9), Mega Man: Dual Override (2027), Monster Hunter Wilds Ascendance (2027, with a Nintendo Switch 2 version in development), the just-released Onimusha: Way of the Sword, PRAGMATA, and Street Fighter 6.
Monster Hunter producer Ryozo Tsujimoto has to be the happiest man in Chiba right now – Wilds Ascendance is positioned as the franchise next massive expansion, and a Switch 2 version means the series is about to reach an entirely new audience. Meanwhile Onimusha: Way of the Sword, which launched September 4 to strong reviews, gets its victory lap on the show floor.
The Supporting Cast Is Insane Too
Do not sleep on the rest of the show. Konami, Koei Tecmo, LEVEL-5, and Xbox all announced TGS 2026 broadcasts and stage lineups. Koei Tecmo stage schedule alone is packed, and LEVEL-5 presence suggests updates on its long-awaited pipeline. With the show running September 17 through 21, expect a full week of trailers, demos, and shadow-drops.
Why This TGS Actually Matters
TGS spent years playing second fiddle to Summer Game Fest and The Game Awards. But 2026 feels different. Playable Kingdom Hearts IV. Playable FFVII Revelation.
