Nintendo Direct September 2026 Just Revealed a Brand-New 2D Metroid — And a New Kirby Game Stole the Show

Nintendo just dropped a 45-minute Direct packed with Switch 2 announcements — and nobody saw the ending coming. A brand-new 2D Metroid, a brand-new Kirby adventure, Monster Hunter Wilds with a firm release date, and a surprise Professor Layton revival all landed in a single showcase. A Brand-New 2D Metroid: Metroid Ravenous

The closing reveal was the one fans will talk about for months. Nintendo closed the September 2026 Direct with Metroid Ravenous, a brand-new 2D Metroid title for Switch 2. Details are still thin — no release window was nailed down on stage — but the reveal alone sent Samus Aran trending worldwide within minutes. After the success of Metroid Dread, expectations for a new side-scrolling entry could not be higher, and Nintendo clearly knows it saved the biggest bomb for last.

A New Kirby Game Is Coming to Switch 2

Right alongside the Metroid reveal, Nintendo pulled back the curtain on a brand-new Kirby game for Switch 2. Monster Hunter Wilds Hits Switch 2 on December 4

Capcom opened the showcase with a bang: Monster Hunter Wilds launches on Switch 2 on December 4, complete with local multiplayer support and all Title Updates released so far included. The upcoming Ascendance expansion is not bundled in, but Nintendo confirmed it will arrive on the platform separately. Bringing one of 2025’s biggest third-party hits to a handheld-hybrid is a massive win for the Switch 2 library.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation — Plus a Crisis Core Surprise

Square Enix showed off more of Final Fantasy VII Revelation, now dated for April 8, with Cloud Strife, Sephiroth, and Yuffie all appearing in the new footage. And in a genuine shock, a Switch 2 version of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion — the essential Zack Fair prequel — dropped effective immediately. Three flavors of Sephiroth on one console is a bold strategy, and honestly, it works.

The Witcher 3 Remastered and Kingdom Come Deliverance 2

CD Projekt Red showcased The Witcher 3 Remastered running on Switch 2, launching September 29 as a free upgrade for existing Switch owners — and it looks leagues better than the original port. Meanwhile, Kingdom Come Deliverance 2: Royal Edition, one of 2025’s best RPGs, is also bound for Switch 2 with all DLC included, arriving sometime in 2027.

Professor Layton Returns December 10

After years of silence, Level-5 finally gave us a real look at Professor Layton and the New World of Steam, launching December 10. The trailer was brisk and light on puzzle gameplay, but the release date alone is enough — Hershel Layton’s return has been one of handheld gaming’s longest-running wishes. Level-5 also teased Yo-kai Watch 2: Haunted Domain for Switch 2, giving the beloved ghost-collecting series another shot outside Japan.

Star Fox Gets Split-Screen, Adventures Joins Switch Online

Fox McCloud fans ate well. A free Star Fox update adds split-screen multiplayer for up to four players on a single Switch 2 plus three new battle stages on September 29. And the long-rumored GameCube classic Star Fox Adventures lands on Nintendo Switch Online’s GameCube app today via the Expansion Pack — no remake, just the beloved original, finally playable again.
