One Piece Chapter 1188: Shocking Theory About Imu’s Omen Power and Luffy’s True Awakening

Eiichiro Oda has done it again. One Piece Chapter 1188, released on July 12, 2026, in Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #33, delivered one of the most devastating chapters in the entire series. After years of hype since his introduction in Chapter 906 back in June 2018, Nerona Imu, the King of the World, finally clashed with Monkey D. Luffy in the climax of the Elbaf Arc. And the result? Luffy lost.

The Battle That Changed Everything

The confrontation began in Chapter 1187 when Luffy, fueled and determined, transformed into Gear 5 with his awakened Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika powers. Their exchange was electric:

Imu: “So thou hast finally shown thyself, Joy Boy!”

Luffy: “Don’t go calling me whatever you want. I’m Monkey D. Luffy, the man who will become the King of the Pirates.”

Chapter 1188 escalated things further. Luffy unveiled a brand-new technique called Gomu Gomu no Majin, a transformation that fans had been theorizing about for months. For a moment, it seemed like the Yonko might actually hold his own against the most powerful being in the One Piece world.

Then Imu ended it.

Using a previously unseen ability called Omen, Nerona Imu manifested a weapon known as the Blade of Void: Boufu and drove it directly through Luffy’s chest. Just like that, Gear 5 was crushed. Luffy became the first Yonko to fall in battle since the defeat of Kaido and Big Mom in Chapter 1050.

Imu’s Cruel Words

What makes this defeat truly chilling is not just the physical blow. It is what Imu said afterward:

“It is clear that thou art not Joy Boy. Joy Boy would never be this weak.”

This single line changes everything we thought we knew about Joy Boy. Imu, who personally defeated the original Joy Boy centuries ago, knows exactly how powerful that entity was. And looking at Luffy, even at full Gear 5 power, Imu saw nothing but a shadow.

Imu also taunted Luffy with a reference to Loki and his Giant body, hinting that the King of the World has already dealt with Elbaf’s Prince in ways we do not yet fully understand. The scope of Imu’s power is becoming terrifyingly clear.

The Omen Power System: Beyond Haki and Devil Fruits

Here is where things get interesting. Imu’s Omen ability does not seem to fit into either the Haki system or the Devil Fruit framework. This is not Conqueror’s Haki. It is not a Paramecia, Zoan, or Logia ability. It is something entirely different.

Multiple reports and analysis from the latest chapters suggest that the Elbaf Arc has introduced a power that officially surpasses both Haki and Devil Fruits. The Omen power appears to draw from the Void Century itself, a force rooted in the primordial darkness that Nika, the Sun God, was meant to counter.

This means Luffy cannot simply punch harder or unlock another Gear to win. He needs something fundamentally different.

Theory: Luffy Must Awaken the True Will of Nika

Here is my theory for what Chapter 1189 and beyond will reveal. Luffy’s current Gear 5 is only a partial awakening of the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika. The fruit has a deeper layer that connects not just to the physical abilities of Nika, but to the will and ideals that the Sun God embodied.

Joy Boy was not just powerful because of his Devil Fruit. He was powerful because he carried the true spirit of liberation. Imu recognized that Luffy, despite having the right fruit, has not yet internalized what it means to be the embodiment of freedom.

I believe the path to defeating Imu involves:

  • A deeper awakening that goes beyond the cartoon-like physics of Gear 5, tapping into the conceptual power of Nika as the Warrior of Liberation
  • Support from Elbaf’s remaining forces, including the Ancient Giants and potentially Hajrudin and the New Giant Warrior Pirates
  • The return of allies like Roronoa Zoro, Sanji, and Jinbe, who will need to handle Imu’s subordinates while Luffy focuses on the King of the World
  • A revelation about Joy Boy’s original defeat that gives Luffy the key to avoiding the same fate

Why This Defeat Was Necessary

Oda has always been a master of the “loss before growth” pattern. Luffy lost to Crocodile. He lost to Aokiji. He lost to Kaido in their first encounter. Every major defeat has been the catalyst for a transformative power-up.

But this time, the stakes are different. The enemy is not a Warlord or a Yonko. It is the ruler of the entire world. The power gap is not something that training alone can bridge.

I believe Chapter 1189 will begin exploring the true nature of the Omen power and how it connects to the Void Century. We may also see Luffy receiving guidance from an unexpected source about what Joy Boy truly represented.

What Do You Think?

Is Luffy truly not the real Joy Boy, or does he just need to unlock something deeper? Can the Omen power be countered, or does Luffy need to develop his own version of it? What role will the Elbaf Giants play in the final confrontation?
