Japan has just produced the most unexpectedly wholesome crossover of 2026: Rilakkuma — the certified laziest, most nap-loving bear in anime — is now officially part of SASUKE, the brutal obstacle competition famous for ending elite athletes’ dreams. Yes, really. The fluffy bear who can barely be bothered to get off the couch has been spotted dozing on top of the Warped Wall, the same obstacle that has humiliated thousands of trained competitors. And if that image alone doesn’t sell you, the collab café in Tokyo is open right now — but only until September 13.
Rilakkuma x SASUKE: The Crossover Nobody Saw Coming
San-X and TBS announced the partnership to celebrate SASUKE World Cup 2026, which aired on TBS on August 24 from 7:00 to 11:00 PM JST. The premise is comedy gold: the world’s toughest obstacle course meets the most relaxed character in Japanese pop culture. In the official artwork, Rilakkuma and friends take a leisurely nap on top of the famous Warped Wall — SASUKE’s signature “soaring wall” that competitors must sprint up before it’s too late — while another version shows the crew wearing collab logo T-shirts, watching the competition go by at their own pace. Peak kawaii chaos.
Napping on the Warped Wall: The Artwork
The key visuals were drawn specifically for the collab, and they deliver exactly what fans hoped for. Rilakkuma, Korilakkuma, Chairoi Koguma, and Kiiroitori all appear in the new designs. Korilakkuma — the pink, slightly mischievous younger sibling — is pictured as if she’s about to attempt the course herself, while Kiiroitori the bird looks like he’s seen it all. There’s even a wink to the original series lore: the characters still share the house of Kaoru, the hard-working office lady, so you know at least one member of the group is exhausted enough to relate to actual SASUKE athletes.
Every Piece of Collab Merch (and Where to Get It)
The limited-edition lineup includes:
- T-shirts with the official Rilakkuma x SASUKE collab logo
- Face towels featuring the napping-on-the-wall artwork
- Sticker sets and acrylic keychains of all four characters
- Clear file folders and tin cases for collectors
Pre-orders opened on TBS Shopping on August 6, and in-store sales started August 24 at the TBS Store (Tokyo Station First Avenue, B1F Tokyo Character Street) and at Branch Park in Akasaka. Given how fast Japanese collab merch sells out, don’t expect these to sit on shelves for long.
The Collab Café Is Open Right Now
Here’s the part that makes this story feel urgent: the Rilakkuma x SASUKE collab café at Branch Park Akasaka (THE HEXAGON 1F, 5-4-7 Akasaka, Minato-ku, Tokyo) runs from August 27 to September 13, 2026 — so it’s still open as you read this. The menu is themed around Anime Rilakkuma season 2, “Teku Teku World Trip,” and reservations opened August 8 with a 770 yen (tax included) booking fee. If you’re in Tokyo this week, this is your window.
Why This Crossover Works So Well
Rilakkuma was born in 2003 and has spent over two decades as San-X’s global ambassador of doing absolutely nothing at your own pace. The TV anime kicked off on TBS in April 2026, airing Saturdays at 9:25 AM, and it’s already built a devoted following. SASUKE, meanwhile, needs no introduction — as Ninja Warrior, it’s become a worldwide franchise with Mount Midoriyama standing as the sport’s most famous (and most unforgiving) finishing line. Putting the chillest bear on the planet on that course is the kind of absurdist pairing that Japanese marketing excels at, and the internet has responded accordingly.
It’s also part of a bigger trend of Japan’s most beloved brands colliding this year — from sleeping in an actual giant Poké Ball in Hokkaido to LEGO building PlayStation sets that collectors can’t stop talking about. Rilakkuma taking on SASUKE is the coziest entry yet.
What do you think?
Would you buy Rilakkuma SASUKE merch, or is the napping-on-the-Warped-Wall artwork too good to resist? More importantly: could Rilakkuma survive Stage 1 of SASUKE, or would he just fall asleep mid-course? Drop your takes in the comments — and if you visit the Akasaka café before September 13, tell us what was on the menu.
