Final Fantasy XIV’s New ‘Bastion’ Job Is Everything Tank Mains Ever Wanted

The day tank mains have been waiting for just arrived. Square Enix has officially revealed Bastion as the first new job coming to Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold, and it is already setting the community on fire. Announced during the Fan Festival 2026 in Berlin, Bastion is a main tank wielding a pair of massive greatshields called skyltborg shields — and no, that is not a spell-check error. That is the actual lore name.

If you have been maining Paladin, Warrior, Dark Knight, or Gunbreaker in FFXIV, you know the feeling: the endless cycle of cooldown management, the anxiety of pulling aggro, the quiet shame of being the tank who keeps dying. Bastion promises to change all of that. Director Naoki Yoshida himself took the stage in Berlin alongside lead combat designer Takatoshi Hirao to debut a six-minute job reveal trailer that sent the crowd — and subsequently the entire internet — into a collective frenzy.

What Makes Bastion Different

Past FFXIV tanks are iconic, but they are all variations on a theme. Paladin blocks. Warrior brawls. Dark Knight Edges. Gunbreaker shoots. Bastion is the first tank in the game that defies easy categorization. The skyltborg greatshields can punch enemies and literally shoot projectiles while the player is mobile. The new tank can tank and deal damage at range simultaneously.

According to the official Square Enix press release, the job is designed to be approachable for newcomers but deep enough to satisfy veteran tanks. It introduces a resource system blending Warrior’s Rage gauge with a secondary meter tied to shield positioning. Timing skyltborg blocks perfectly builds up the Bastion’s signature Counter Stance, which transforms defensive cooldowns into aggressive ones.

The Evercold Expansion Context

Bastion is part of the larger FFXIV: Evercold expansion, announced at Fan Festival 2026 Anaheim. The expansion launches in January 2027, and Square Enix has promised the biggest content drop in the game’s history. Alongside Bastion, the expansion introduces a new area called Thavarael, a collaboration raid series with Final Fantasy VII Remake, and the Nintendo Switch 2 port of the entire game.

Producer and director Naoki Yoshida noted during the Berlin reveal that the team wanted Bastion to feel like a completely new way to experience FFXIV without alienating the existing tank community. Early impressions from attendees suggest they pulled it off.

Within hours of the reveal, the FFXIV subreddit exploded with theorycraft posts. Players are debating optimal stat distributions, analyzing the six-minute trailer frame by frame, and comparing Bastion’s toolkit to tank jobs in World of Warcraft and Lost Ark. Content creator Mrs_Mercy, a well-known FFXIV theorycrafter, posted a breakdown video within 45 minutes, estimating that Bastion’s skill ceiling could rival the Summoner’s newly reworked rotation. Community figure Azuren_Above on X speculated that Bastion’s ranged attack mechanic could finally make tanking in duty finder less intimidating for newer players.

What Do You Think?

Bastion is a bold move by Square Enix. Tanks in Final Fantasy XIV have historically been the backbone of every party composition, and introducing a main tank with ranged and melee hybrid mechanics could reshape the meta entirely. Are you going to level Bastion when Evercold drops? Does the skyltborg shield mechanic appeal to you, or are you worried it might overcomplicate the tank role?
