For an entire week, millions of Attack on Titan fans stared at one cryptic image of Eren Yeager, Mikasa Ackerman and Levi Ackerman in formal dinner attire, convincing themselves the impossible was finally happening: WIT Studio was coming back to make new Attack on Titan anime. On August 20, 2026, the truth dropped — and depending on who you ask, it’s either adorable or absolutely devastating.
The Teaser That Sent the Fandom Into Meltdown
On August 13, WIT Studio posted a gorgeous new visual featuring six fan-favorite characters: Eren Yeager, Mikasa Ackerman, Armin Arlert, Levi Ackerman, Erwin Smith and Hange Zoë, all dressed up for what the caption mysteriously called a “special dinner.” The only other detail? A date — August 20, 2026.
That was all it took. Within hours, X, Reddit and TikTok were drowning in theories. Some fans swore it had to be a remake of the later seasons in WIT’s iconic style. Others whispered about a brand-new OVA, a movie recap trilogy, or even an adaptation of Hajime Isayama’s side stories. After all, WIT animated the first three legendary seasons before MAPPA took over for The Final Season, so the idea of the original studio returning felt like a dream come true.
So… What Was the Big Announcement?
Drumroll, please: it’s a café. A really nice café, but still a café.
WIT Studio officially revealed “Attack on Titan Café of That Period ~Adolescent/Teenage Dinner~,” a limited-time themed restaurant opening at BOX cafe&space Lumine Est in Shinjuku, Tokyo, running from September 3 to October 12, 2026. The event comes with brand-new WIT Studio illustrations of the cast enjoying their special dinner, a fully themed menu, and exclusive merchandise you can only get there.
- Dates: September 3 – October 12, 2026
- Location: BOX cafe&space Lumine Est, Shinjuku, Tokyo
- Highlights: New WIT Studio artwork, themed food and drinks, limited-edition merch
To be fair, the new illustrations are genuinely beautiful — seeing the Survey Corps members relaxed, dressed up and smiling instead of fighting for humanity’s survival is exactly the kind of fanservice the “that period” concept promises. But when your week-long teaser gets mistaken for a Season 4 remake announcement, a themed café was never going to escape the backlash entirely.
Why Fans Are So Split Over This Reveal
The reaction online has been hilarious and heartbreakingly honest all at once. One camp is already booking flights to Tokyo, calling the café concept “the coziest thing this franchise has ever done.” The other camp is posting crying Eren memes with captions like “we waited a WEEK for sandwiches?”
Here’s the thing though — the disappointment actually proves how much love this franchise still commands. The manga ended in April 2021 after 12 years of serialization, the anime concluded its 94-episode run with The Final Chapters, and yet a single teaser image can still send the entire internet into speculation overdrive. Not many series can pull that off three years after their finale.
And there are real reasons to stay hopeful. Producer Tetsuya Kinoshita has openly hinted that new films and future projects for the franchise are being planned. The upcoming Attack on Titan 3 game launches December 10 with a brand-new opening animation by MAPPA. The Last ATTACK compilation film smashed past 1 billion yen at the Japanese box office. This franchise is not sleeping — it’s just very good at keeping secrets.
Is WIT Studio Quietly Warming Up for Something Bigger?
Some observant fans have pointed out that studios rarely commission fresh key art from their original animators just for a café. The fact that WIT Studio produced an entire set of new illustrations featuring the full main cast has fueled theories that this dinner event might be the first step in a longer anniversary plan — possibly tied to the franchise’s ongoing celebrations.
Nothing is confirmed, of course. But between Kinoshita’s project hints, MAPPA’s continued involvement, and Isayama himself remaining active with the franchise, the smart money says this café is a pit stop, not the final destination. For now though, if you want to see Eren, Mikasa and Armin enjoy one peaceful meal together, Shinjuku is the place to be this September.
While you wait for the café doors to open, the anime world isn’t slowing down: Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle Part 1 is finally streaming, Jujutsu Kaisen has a massive September event on the way, and Makoto Shinkai’s next film just locked in its global release deal.
What do you think?
Was this reveal a charming celebration or the ultimate bait-and-switch? Would you fly to Tokyo for the café — or were you holding out hope for WIT Studio’s anime comeback?
