Sony just closed the book on one of the wildest State of Play broadcasts in years, and fans are still arguing about it. Final Fantasy VII Revelation finally has a release date, GTA 6 is getting its own PS5 controllers, a shark RPG sequel nobody asked for just got announced, and half of PlayStation Studios simply did not show up. Final Fantasy VII Revelation Closes the Show With April 2027 Release Date
The headline act belonged to Square Enix. Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the third and final chapter of the acclaimed remake trilogy, launches on April 8, 2027 for PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X and S, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, all on the same day. The extended trailer showed off Cloud, Tifa, Barret, Yuffie, Red XIII, Vincent, Cid, and Cait Sith, alongside deeper battle customization and side quests that play out differently depending on which character you control.
Square Enix also confirmed a Story Expansion pass with two DLC chapters: Story DLC 1 focused on Sephiroth, and Story DLC 2 centered on Vincent and the Turks, both arriving within 12 months of launch. And in the detail that instantly melted social media, you can now photograph cats across the new region of Wutai, which you reach by parachuting out of the Highwind. Red XIII also takes center stage in the Queen’s Blood card game this time around.
GTA 6 DualSense Controllers, Resident Evil Movie, and Crimson Desert DLC
Hardware collectors got a treat with two new limited edition DualSense wireless controllers inspired by Grand Theft Auto 6, revealed during the broadcast. Horror fans were treated to an extended clip of Zach Cregger’s upcoming Resident Evil movie. And Crimson Desert players will not wait long for more content: the open-world action RPG’s first expansion drops next month.
Horror sequel Until Dawn 2 locked in its release date with a chilling new trailer, while the long-rumored Metro 2039 finally resurfaced with a release date of its own. Then came the genuine shock of the night: Maneater 2, the sequel to the man-eating shark RPG, was announced out of nowhere and instantly became the meme of the showcase.
The No-Shows: Where Were God of War, Naughty Dog, and Destiny 3?
For all the reveals, the conversation after the show was dominated by who did not appear. Sony Santa Monica’s God of War Laufey, due out in February, was nowhere to be seen. Naughty Dog’s Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet skipped the broadcast entirely. Media Molecule, Sony Bend, and Haven’s Fairgame$ were also absent, and the live chat spent half the show spamming requests for Destiny 3 instead.
State of Play Japan: Ghost of Yotei, Dragon Ball, and Blue Lock
The broadcast rolled straight into State of Play Japan, which arguably stole the show. Ghost of Yotei: Echoes of Sekigahara, the story expansion for Sucker Punch’s samurai epic, launches October 1, 2026 as part of the Ghost of Yotei Complete Edition. Monster Hunter boss Ryozo Tsujimoto took the stage to detail the Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance expansion, revealing the brand-new Elder Dragon Gundoraga.
Konami had a big night with two projects: Rev. Noir, due in 2027, and Rhapsody in Scarlet, a 1920s New York action game starring a mage named Ellie who weaves magic into combo attacks alongside Beast abilities and a mafia storyline. Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 was confirmed for 2027, Fate/Extra Record hits PS5 and PS4 on January 28, 2027, and The Eminence in Shadow: Phantom Echoes got its first trailer.
Other Japan-side highlights included Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World with a villain that sounds suspiciously like Neil Newbon, the voice of Astarion in Baldur’s Gate 3, plus the soulslike Daba: Land of Water Scar from PlayStation’s China Hero Project, cyberpunk roguelike SlashZero launching spring 2027 with a demo out today, zombie action oddity Stupid Never Dies, CygamesEdge debut project Where the Seeds Fall arriving November 5, 2026, and a Rematch collaboration with Blue Lock kicking off September 24 featuring Yoichi Isagi, Meguru Bachira, Seishiro Nagi, and Rin Itoshi.
