A Legacy 43 Years in the Making
For the uninitiated: Armored Trooper VOTOMS is not just another robot show. Created and directed by Ryosuke Takahashi in 1983, the original series followed Chirico Cuvie, a battle-scarred soldier pilot wandering a hostile galaxy where war never truly ends. It was gritty, paranoid, and painfully human — the exact opposite of the shiny superhero robots dominating television at the time. The franchise is widely credited as one of the most influential real-robot anime ever made, paving the way for everything from Viper’s Creed to modern military sci-fi.
This new film exists for a very special reason: it anchors Sunrise’s 50th anniversary celebration. The studio behind Gundam, Cowboy Bebop, and countless classics picked Oshii — who cut his teeth directing episodes of the original VOTOMS — to resurrect its most hard-boiled property. Takahashi himself returns as supervisor, meaning the DNA of the original remains intact while Oshii brings his signature dreamlike dread to the battlefield.
So Who Exactly Is the Grey Witch?
The new trailer finally reveals the actual story, and it’s a clever mirror of the 1983 classic. The titular “Grey Witch” is Ash Vamps, a mysterious blue-haired figure whose nonchalant demeanor will feel instantly familiar to anyone who remembers Chirico Cuvie. This time, however, the hunter is an officer named Maki Stauffenberg, who has been quietly tasked with investigating Ash — a setup that deliberately echoes how Captain Rochina once shadowed Chirico in the original series.
Oshii has always loved stories about people being watched, hunted, and manipulated by forces larger than themselves. Pairing that obsession with VOTOMS‘ war-weary universe feels almost too perfect. And according to early reactions from Tokyo press screenings, the film is being produced in collaboration with Production I.G, the same studio Oshii worked with on his most acclaimed films.
Why This Comeback Matters Right Now
It has been roughly 15 years since the last major VOTOMS anime project, and the mecha genre itself has been fighting for relevance in a market dominated by isekai and idol shows.
