Four years after Cyberpunk: Edgerunners made the entire anime community ugly-cry over David Martinez, Netflix and Studio Trigger are about to do it all over again. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is officially confirmed for Q4 2026, and the first footage drops THIS THURSDAY at Anime NYC 2026 on the Javits Center Main Stage. If you thought the original was a one-time masterpiece, prepare to have your heart broken twice.
A Brand New Story in Night City
Here is the twist that has everyone talking: this is not a continuation of David and Lucy’s story. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is a standalone sequel set in the same dystopian Night City, but with an entirely new cast of characters and a completely different director at the helm. Kai Ikarashi, who previously worked as an animation director on the first season, is now steering the ship. Hiroyuki Imaishi, the legendary director behind Gurren Lagann and Kill la Kill who helmed the original, is not returning for this installment. That is a bold move, and fans are divided.
The new protagonist is Roman Carax, voiced by Momoka Terasawa in Japanese and Valeria Rodriguez in English. Roman is described as a young cinephile obsessed with documenting the unfiltered truth of Night City, constantly recording the brutalities and corruption that define life in the corporate warzone. Think of him as Night City’s own roving journalist, except everyone around him keeps dying.
The Cast Is Stacked
Joining Momoka Terasawa is an impressive lineup of voice talent. Akari Kito voices Talia Yang, a fiercely independent girl who escaped a corporate upbringing to run with Maelstrom, the street gang infamous for sticking way too much cyberware into their bodies. Kentaro Tone voices Weak Kingsley, and Koki Uchiyama rounds out the main cast. For the English dub, Clancy Brown, the actor behind Mr. Krabs and Lex Luthor, takes on the role of Weak Kingsley alongside Kimoy Lee as Talia Yang.
Studio Trigger is once again handling the animation, and CD Projekt Red is producing alongside them. The screenplay comes from Bartosz Sztybor, who wrote for the original series and has been deeply embedded in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe through his work on the game’s DLC stories. Masahiko Otsuka, a veteran Trigger animator, co-writes the script.
The Music Will Hit Different
The first season’s soundtrack was legendary, blending Run the Jewels, Rosa Walton, and A Varied and Unusual Soundtrack with David’s emotional arc. For the sequel, Netflix has already revealed two tracks: the opening theme is a cover of The Cure’s “10:15 Saturday Night,” and the ending theme is “Watson” by Petite Meller. If the opening is anything like the original’s chaotic energy, this is going to be an absolute banger.
Why Anime NYC Matters
The timing of this reveal is no accident. Anime NYC 2026 kicks off tomorrow, August 20, at the Javits Convention Center in New York City, and Netflix is opening the Main Stage programming Thursday evening with exclusive debuts. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is the headliner, alongside previews for SAKAMOTO DAYS Season 2 and LEGO One Piece. The convention runs through August 23 and features over 150 hours of programming, including Kagurabachi’s Anime World Tour premiere and a yama concert on the Main Stage.
Netflix has been on a anime tear lately. Between SAKAMOTO DAYS, Jujutsu Kaisen Season 4, and now Edgerunners 2, the streaming giant is clearly betting big on the medium. The original Edgerunners was one of Netflix’s most successful anime collaborations, and the pressure to deliver a worthy follow-up is immense.
The Original Still Hurts
Let us be real for a second. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners remains one of the most emotionally devastating anime series ever made. David Martinez’s rise from struggling student to cyberpsycho mercenary, his relationship with Lucy, and the gut-wrenching finale that left fans in ruins. The show single-handedly revived interest in Cyberpunk 2077, driving millions of players back to the game. Studio Trigger proved they could take a video game IP and turn it into genuine art.
Now the question is whether Kai Ikarashi and the new cast can recapture that lightning in a bottle. The standalone sequel approach is risky. You cannot lean on David and Lucy’s chemistry, and you are asking audiences to invest in brand new characters while the ghost of the original still looms large. But if anyone can pull it off, it is Trigger. These are the people who made Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt and Promare. They know how to go big or go home.
What Do You Think?
Are you excited for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, or do you think the original was perfect and should have been left alone? The new cast looks incredible, and Kai Ikarashi has serious chops, but can anything truly follow up that ending?
