Capcom just dropped the release date for Onimusha: Way of the Sword — and it’s coming September 4, 2026, a full three weeks earlier than originally planned. After two decades of silence, the legendary samurai action series starring Miyamoto Musashi — modeled after the face of Toshiro Mifune himself — is finally swinging back. And from what the latest trailers show, it has every intention of making up for lost time.
Capcom Moved the Date Up — and That Says a Lot
Back in June, Capcom announced Onimusha: Way of the Sword for September 25, 2026. Then, on July 2, the company shocked everyone by pulling the release forward to September 4, 2026. In the games industry, moving a date earlier almost always means one thing: the team is confident. Director Satoru Nihei and producer Akihito Kadowaki are betting that a game this anticipated doesn’t need the extra weeks — and honestly, after the hands-on impressions, they might be right.
This is the first mainline Onimusha since Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams (2006). For a franchise that started on the PlayStation 2 as one of Capcom’s flagship IPs, the silence lasted two full decades. Now it returns on the RE Engine — the same tech behind Resident Evil and Street Fighter 6 — and it runs on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and get this… Nintendo Switch 2.
Musashi Is the Deadliest Swordsman in Gaming History
The story follows Miyamoto Musashi — the historical swordsman brought to life with Toshiro Mifune’s likeness (licensed from Mifune Productions). Set in a dark-fantasy Kyoto during the Edo period, Musashi cuts through rival swordsmen, demons, and supernatural horrors in a city rotting with evil.
The combat system is pure Onimusha DNA, remastered for 2026:
- Break Issen — parry at the perfect moment and instantly dismember your enemy. Consecutive perfect counters build buffs that let you chain executions.
- The Soul Gauntlet — the iconic oni gauntlet returns. Yellow souls heal, red souls buy upgrades, blue souls power your Oni Armaments — devastating special weapons.
- Oni Vision — a supernatural sense that highlights every demon hiding in the area, even those disguised as ordinary objects.
- Wide-linear levels — the team promises open areas with side quests this time, a first for the series, giving players breathing room to explore the cursed city.
That Severing Fates Trailer Broke the Internet
Capcom released a new look at the game earlier this month that fans have been obsessing over. Titled “Severing Fates,” the trailer is stunning brutal: Musashi negotiating against demonic swordsmen, parry counters that finish the screen, and one very clean look at the kind of cinematic action the studio is famous for. Anime News Network’s early coverage called it “a cinematic action ride that has me curious” — and the curiosity is turning into hype everywhere.
Why Everyone Suddenly Cares About Onimusha Again
Partly it’s nostalgia — for a generation that grew up on PS2-era action games, Onimusha is peak memory. But partly, it’s the moment: 2026 is packed with samurai and sword-focused action (from Sekiro to everything else CAPCOM’s been teasing), and a mainline, big-budget Musashi title landing on the hot new Nintendo Switch 2 makes it a system seller candidate. If the demo’s boss fights are anything to go by — YouTube previews are already quoting circulation mechanics and parry-steering combovideo — this could be the action game of the fall.
