Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Just Dropped Two DLC Announcements That Will Shatter Every FF7 Fan Brain

Square Enix just confirmed that Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is not only launching on April 8, 2027 — it is also getting a Story Expansion Pass with dedicated DLC for Sephiroth and Vincent Valentine. Yes, you read that right. The most iconic villain in JRPG history is getting his own playable story, and fans are absolutely losing their minds.

The DLC Nobody Expected (But Everyone Wanted)

The Story Expansion Pass was revealed alongside the game at PlayStation State of Play, and it includes two separate DLC packs. The first puts players directly in control of Sephiroth for an untold side story, arriving in Winter 2027. The second focuses on Vincent Valentine and the Turks, launching in Spring 2028. Both are included with the Premium Edition, which also grants 24 hours of early access before the standard launch.

Director Naoki Hamaguchi was quick to clarify that the DLC will not gate the true ending behind a paywall. Instead, both expansions explore untold stories in a spin-off fashion. This means the main narrative of Revelation remains complete in the base game, while the DLC offers bonus perspectives that enrich the world without punishing players who skip them.

Why Sephiroth as a Playable Character Changes Everything

Sephiroth has always been a fan-favorite, but playable Sephiroth in a modern Final Fantasy title is something the community has begged for since Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth let players briefly control him. The DLC promises a full side story exploring his perspective, and given how Rebirth handled his brief playable section, expectations are astronomically high.

Meanwhile, the Vincent Valentine and Turks DLC raises even more questions. Square Enix already told the Vincent story once with Dirge of Cerberus in 2006 — a game that most fans remember as one of the weakest entries in the franchise. Hamaguchi has stated that Revelation aims to connect the spin-offs and Advent Children with the main trilogy, so this DLC could be the bridge that finally ties the entire Compilation of Final Fantasy 7 together. Whether that means redeeming Dirge of Cerberus or simply ignoring it remains to be seen.

New Gameplay Features That Look Insane

The State of Play presentation also revealed several new gameplay mechanics for Revelation. Chocobos can now participate in mounted combat, growing stronger as players progress through the story. The system is optional — players can dismount and fight normally at any time — but the idea of riding into battle on a Chocobo while summoning Ifrit is already dominating social media.

Two new job systems were also showcased. The Summoner class allows players to bring in entities like Ifrit to fight alongside them, while the Knight acts as a tank that supports allies. These join the existing job systems from previous Remake entries, giving players even more customization options for the finale.

Wutai was confirmed as a fully explorable region, complete with a grappling gun for rooftop traversal and — perhaps most importantly — a cat photography side quest. Returning locations like Gongaga will feature familiar characters like Cissnei from the spin-offs, and odd jobs will change depending on which party member is leading.

And yes, Queen’s Blood is back. This time the card game serves as a new story mode for Red XIII, as he takes on increasingly challenging opponents across the world.

Every Platform, Every Edition

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation launches on April 8, 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. The Premium Edition includes the base game, the Story Expansion Pass, and 24 hours of early access. Newcomers can also pre-order the Trilogy Edition, which grants immediate access to Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth ahead of launch — a smart move for anyone who still has not experienced the full Remake trilogy.

Square Enix is clearly going all-in on making Revelation the definitive conclusion to the Remake era, and with Sephiroth getting his own DLC, they know exactly what the fans want. Much like how the GTA 6 Netflix trailer sent console sales through the roof, FF7 Revelation is already shaping up to be one of the biggest gaming events of 2027. The question is not whether this game will sell — it absolutely will. The question is whether Square Enix can stick the landing on one of the most anticipated sequels in gaming history.
