Game Freak, the Tokyo studio behind the biggest franchise in gaming history, is about to release its most ambitious game ever — and there isn’t a single Pikachu in it. Beast of Reincarnation, the studio’s first full-scale action RPG, launches August 4 on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC, and the internet has already crowned it “Ghibli meets Sekiro.” If you thought Game Freak only knew how to make creature-collecting adventures, this one is about to change your mind.
Not Pokémon: Meet Emma and Koo
Set in Japan in the year 4026, Beast of Reincarnation follows Emma the Sealer, an 18-year-old woman with blight powers who can manipulate plants to traverse the ruined landscape and tear through enemies. Her partner in survival? A stray dog named Koo. Game Freak describes it as a “one-person, one-dog action RPG” — a post-apocalyptic buddy journey through a world choked by a mysterious corruption that has poisoned nature itself.
The setup alone is a radical departure for the studio. Instead of cheerful towns and gym battles, you get a dying Japan overrun by oversized mutant creatures and rogue robots. Emma’s plant magic isn’t just for combat — it’s her grappling hook, her bridge, her way of bending a hostile world to her will. And Koo isn’t a fetch-quest gimmick; the dog is a genuine combat companion, which is already the most talked-about mechanic in every preview.
Why Everyone Is Comparing It to Princess Mononoke and Sekiro
From the moment it was shown, Beast of Reincarnation drew two very specific comparisons. Visually and tonally, critics keep invoking Studio Ghibli’s Princess Mononoke — a lone heroine, a corrupted forest, a battle between nature and industry. Mechanically, the combat is being compared to Black Myth: Wukong, Nier: Automata and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice: deliberate, punishing, parry-heavy fights against colossal bosses that demand patience and pattern recognition.
That’s a wild flex for a studio best known for turn-based RPGs. Game Freak reportedly built the whole thing on Unreal Engine 5, and early hands-on coverage from outlets like IGN has praised the enemy design and the weight of Emma’s strikes. The blend is odd on paper — Ghibli melancholy meets FromSoftware brutality — but every preview so far says it works.
From Project Bloom to August 4
This game has been cooking for a long time. Development began back in 2020, and the project was first revealed in May 2023 under the working title Project Bloom, announced as a partnership between Game Freak and the publisher then known as Private Division (now Fictions). At reveal, all anyone got was concept art of a lone woman in a forest and a projected 2026 window. Now it’s finally here.
The creative team reads like a who’s-who of Game Freak’s internal talent: Kota Furushima directs and writes, Mika Kurosawa produces, and the art direction is led by Erika Kuga. That this is a brand-new IP rather than yet another spin-off of an existing franchise makes it the riskiest — and most exciting — thing the studio has shipped in decades.
A Day-One Game Pass Bomb
Here’s the kicker: Beast of Reincarnation hits Xbox Game Pass on day one, which means millions of subscribers can try Game Freak’s new direction for free. It launches on the exact same day Final Fantasy XIV arrives on Switch 2, making August 4 the most stacked Tuesday of the summer.
And it’s just the opening act of a brutal month. PS Plus just revealed its August lineup, Steins;Gate Re:Boot arrives August 20, and Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Volume 2 closes out the month on August 27. If you were planning to be productive in August, cancel those plans now.
What Do You Think?
Game Freak stepping outside the Pokémon sandbox is a genuinely big deal — the last time it shipped a non-Pokémon hit, most gamers weren’t born yet. Are you excited to see Emma and Koo’s story, or are you skeptical that the Pokémon studio can pull off a Soulslike? Will you play it on Game Pass, or are you buying it on PS5? And which August release are you most hyped for — Beast of Reincarnation, Steins;Gate Re:Boot, or something else entirely? Drop your thoughts in the comments!
