Ghost in the Shell Reboot Dethrones Bleach as Japan’s Most Anticipated Anime of Summer 2026

In a result that nobody saw coming, Ghost in the Shell (2026) — the brand-new Science SARU reboot — has officially overtaken Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War Part 4 as Japan’s most anticipated anime of the Summer 2026 season. And honestly? The anime community is losing its collective mind over it.

The Survey That Changed Everything

Japan-based marketing research firm CM Site Co. Ltd recently polled 2,452 anime fans, asking them one simple question: which Summer 2026 title are you most excited about? The results, published on the Japanese pop culture site Ranking!, sent shockwaves through the community.

Ghost in the Shell secured 115 votes, edging out Bleach’s 110 votes by a razor-thin margin. Rounding out the top five were some heavy hitters:

  • Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 3
  • The Elusive Samurai Season 2
  • From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman Season 2

That’s right — Bleach’s grand finale, the conclusion to the Thousand-Year Blood War arc that fans have waited years for, was beaten by a reboot. A reboot of a 30-year-old franchise. Let that satisfying sink in.

Why Ghost in the Shell Is Dominating

So what makes this reboot so special? For starters, it’s being handled by Science SARU, the studio behind visually stuing hits like Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! and the recently aounced Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia. The series is directed by Toma Kimura (credited as “Mokochan”), and from what we’ve seen in trailers, it’s a complete visual reinvention.

The original Ghost in the Shell manga was created by Masamune Shirow in 1989, and it fundamentally changed how we think about cyberpunk storytelling. The franchise follows Motoko Kusanagi, a cybernetically enhanced police agent hunting down dangerous hackers and tech-terrorists in a world where humans freely navigate cyberspace through avatars called “Ghosts.”

One voter captured the excitement perfectly: “I’m happy to see that futuristic feel in modern animation.” Another fan pointed specifically to Motoko’s enduring appeal, saying they “want to experience the coolness of Motoko Kusanagi again.”

A New Generation Discovers the Major

What’s particularly interesting is the influx of newcomers. Many voters acknowledged they’d never experienced Ghost in the Shell before and are eager to finally dive in. “It’s a famous work,” one respondent said. “So I want to take this opportunity to watch it.”

This reboot is clearly designed to be an entry point — a fresh interpretation rather than a sequel. And with Mamoru Oshii’s legendary 1995 film still considered one of the greatest anime films ever made, expectations are sky-high.

The Bleach Factor

Don’t feel too sorry for Bleach, though. Tite Kubo’s epic still pulled in 110 votes and a solid second place. The Thousand-Year Blood War Part 4: The Calamity represents the culmination of one of shonen anime’s most iconic arcs. But the fact that a reboot — not a finale — took the top spot speaks volumes about the cultural weight Ghost in the Shell carries in Japan.

When and Where to Watch

Ghost in the Shell (2026) premieres on July 7, 2026 in Japan. International viewers can stream it exclusively on Prime Video. Meanwhile, Masamune Shirow’s original manga is available in English through Kodansha USA.

Summer 2026 is shaping up to be one of the most stacked anime seasons in recent memory. Between Ghost in the Shell, Bleach’s finale, Mushoku Tensei Season 3, and the Cyberpunk: Edgeruers 2 first look dropping in July, there’s simply too much good content and not enough hours in the day.
