Every summer anime season has that one dark horse nobody saw coming. Remember when people slept on Solo Leveling before it absolutely dominated? That same energy is building around Black Torch, and if the latest trailer and key visuals are any indication, this July 2026 release might be the most underrated anime drop of the year.
Here is the thing about Black Torch. It is not your typical shonen battle anime. It mixes ninja warfare, supernatural mononoke spirits, and a teenage boy who can talk to animals into something that sounds completely unhinged. And honestly? That is exactly why it might work.
What Is Black Torch About?
Jiro Azuma is a high schooler with a seriously unusual upbringing. Raised by his grandfather in the ancient art of the shinobi, Jiro has been trained as a ninja since childhood. But his real secret weapon is something he never asked for — the ability to communicate with animals.
Everything changes when Jiro finds an injured black cat in the forest and nurses it back to health. That cat turns out to be Rago, the Black Star of Doom, an immortal mononoke (evil spirit) of immense power. Rago was attacked by other mononoke who wanted to exploit his abilities, and when one of those spirits kills Jiro in a nighttime assault, Rago does the only thing he can — he fuses with Jiro to bring him back to life.
Their new combined existence catches the attention of the Bureau of Espionage, a covert organization that hunts mononoke. Jiro and Rago end up recruited into an anti-mononoke special operations unit, and the supernatural ninja warfare begins.
The Cast Is Seriously Stacked
The voice cast alone should tell you this project is getting serious investment from Shueisha and the production committee.
Ryota Suzuki, known for his explosive energy in A Silent Voice and Chainsaw Man, takes on Jiro Azuma. Yoji Ueda, a veteran with decades of iconic roles, voices Rago the mononoke cat. The supporting roster includes Sayaka Senbongi as Ichika Kishimojin, Junya Enoki as Reiji Kirihara, Junichi Suwabe as Ryosuke Shiba, and Reina Ueda as Usami. That is a roster that would headline most major anime productions.
Behind the Scenes: The Team You Need to Know
The anime is being produced by 100studio under the direction of Kei Umabiki, who previously worked on Quality Assurance in Another World. Character design is handled by Gou Suzuki, who served as co-character designer on Sword Art Online Alicization. The music is composed by Yutaka Yamada, one of the most sought-after anime composers right now with credits on Vinland Saga and To Your Eternity.
The series composition and screenplay are by Gigaemon Ichikawa, with sub-character design by Yumi Nakamura.
Theme Songs by SiM and I Don’t Like Mondays
The opening theme, FREEZE ME UP, is performed by SiM, the Japanese rock band known for their explosive live performances and heavy sound. The ending theme, Groooovy, is by I Don’t Like Mondays. Both songs were previewed in the June 2026 trailer and got immediate buzz from fans.
From Cancelled Manga to Anime Adaptation
Here is where the story gets interesting. The Black Torch manga by Tsuyoshi Takaki originally ran in Jump Square from December 2016 to March 2018 before moving to Shonen Jump Plus and wrapping up in July 2018. It was cancelled with only 19 chapters across 5 volumes — hardly the stuff of anime adaptations are made of.
Yet here we are. Viz Media licensed the English release, and now a full anime is premiering on Crunchyroll. The fact that a short-run manga is getting this level of production suggests that the creative team behind the anime has plans that go beyond what the manga originally delivered. Either they are expanding the story significantly, or there is something about this world that caught the producers attention in a big way.
When and Where to Watch
Black Torch premieres on July 4, 2026 on Tokyo MX and streams on Crunchyroll across North America, Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, Oceania, the Middle East, and CIS regions. That is less than a month away.
Why This Could Be the Dark Horse of Summer 2026
Summer 2026 anime season is packed with heavy hitters. But Black Torch has something most other shows do not — the element of surprise. Nobody expects a cancelled short-run manga to suddenly produce one of the most visually striking trailers of the season. The combination of ninja action, mononoke lore, and the bizarre dynamic between a teenage ninja and an immortal cat spirit is genuinely unique.
Add in Yutaka Yamada composing the score, SiM handling the opening theme, and a voice cast that reads like a who is who of anime talent, and you have a production that is clearly not phoning it in.
What do you think? Is Black Torch going to be the surprise hit of Summer 2026, or will it end up like the many short-lived adaptations that come and go? Drop your take below.
