Black Clover Season 2 Finally Returns After 5 Years — And It Was Worth Every Second of the Wait

Five years. Five long, agonizing years of silence. And then, on October 3, 2026, Black Clover Season 2 dropped its premiere episode on Crunchyroll, and the anime world collectively lost its mind. Episode 171, titled “War Begins,” didn’t just mark a comeback — it announced that Asta, Yuno, and the entire Black Bulls squad are here to finish what they started. No filler arcs, no delays, no half-measures. The Spade Kingdom Arc is officially in motion, and the hype is absolutely unreal.

Why Did Black Clover Disappear for Over Five Years?

When Black Clover’s original run ended at Episode 170 in March 2021, fans were left with more questions than answers. The hiatus wasn’t caused by a single problem — it was a perfect storm of three issues crashing into each other simultaneously.

First, the anime had caught up to creator Yuki Tabata‘s manga. There simply wasn’t enough source material to keep adapting without dipping into filler territory. Second, Tabata himself was battling health issues that forced him to slow down his chapter releases significantly. Third, Studio Pierrot was burning through its animators on a grueling weekly schedule that the rest of the shonen industry had already abandoned in favor of seasonal models.

The decision to pause was painful but necessary. And the payoff? Tabata completed the entire Black Clover manga on May 1, 2026, wrapping the story with Chapter 392 in Jump GIGA’s Spring Edition. That means the anime now has a finished blueprint to follow — no more catch-up anxiety, no more filler nightmares.

Episode 171: “War Begins” Hits Like a Truck

Director Ayataka Tanemura — the same director behind the acclaimed Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King film and episodes 153-170 of the original run — wastes absolutely zero time in the Season 2 premiere. Within the first two minutes, the episode reorients viewers and plunges straight into the Dark Triad‘s all-out invasion of the Clover Kingdom.

Asta and his devil partner Liebe (voiced by Nobuhiko Okamoto) get an intense training sequence that showcases their evolving anti-magic synergy. Meanwhile, Yuno (voiced by Nobunaga Shimazaki) sets up his side of the battlefield, and the resistance against Dante Zogratis, Zenon Zogratis, and Vanica Zogratis begins to take shape.

The animation quality has visibly leveled up from the original weekly run. Studio Pierrot clearly used those five years wisely, and the seasonal format is already paying dividends in every frame.

The Entire Original Cast Returns

One of the biggest reliefs for fans is that every major voice actor reprises their role. Gakuto Kajiwara returns as Asta with all his signature intensity. Junichi Suwabe brings back the unforgettable Yami Sukehiro, and Kana Yūki once again voices Noelle Silva in what promises to be her most powerful arc yet — the Saint Valkyrie transformation is coming.

The supporting cast is equally stacked: Nana Mizuki as Vanessa Enoteca, Ayane Sakura as Secre Swallowtail, Hiro Shimono as the newly prominent Nacht Faust, and Toshiyuki Morikawa as the enigmatic Julius Novachrono. The opening theme “Kienai Riyuu” by WANIMA is already climbing charts, and the ending theme “Yellow Brick Road” by ONE or EIGHT perfectly captures the bittersweet tone of the war arc.

Fortnite Just Made Black Clover Even Bigger

As if a five-year comeback wasn’t enough, Epic Games dropped a Fortnite x Black Clover collaboration on the very same day as the Season 2 premiere. Skins of Asta, Noelle, and Yuno hit the Fortnite Item Shop, instantly introducing the series to millions of gamers who may not have watched a single episode. It’s a brilliant cross-promotional move that signals just how big Black Clover has become in the anime mainstream.

The Road to the Final Season

Here’s the part that makes this comeback even more significant: Black Clover Season 2’s second cour has already been confirmed as the “Final Season,” scheduled for 2027. This means the anime is racing toward a definitive conclusion rather than an open-ended adaptation. For a series that spent half a decade as a giant question mark, knowing there’s an actual finish line changes everything.

New episodes air every Saturday at 8:00 AM PT on Crunchyroll, with TV Tokyo broadcasting in Japan at 11:00 PM JST. The entire 170-episode original run is also available for binge-watching on Crunchyroll for anyone who needs to catch up.

What Do You Think?

Was the five-year wait worth it? Did Episode 171 live up to your expectations, or were you hoping for more? Which character’s return are you most excited about — Asta’s anti-magic evolution, Yuno’s wind spirit power-up, or Noelle’s Saint Valkyrie transformation? And what about that Fortnite collab — genius marketing move or unnecessary distraction? Drop your thoughts below and let’s discuss!
